Atchison State Fishing Lake
07 May 01

Nice Bass Rob!

On the 7 May trip, I caught 20 bass and three crappie in about 2.5 hours. Water was clear and the fish were biting. Most productive fly? Gray squirrel tail with a black body and brown flash.

This is a really nice little lake located about three miles north of Atchison. I know it holds bass, sunfish, bluegills, crappie, and catfish because I've caught them all here all the fly.  Although bass boats are allowed and seen on the lake, float tubes, canoes, and kayaks provide excellent access.

The large flats area on the west side of the lake make for super top water action early in the morning. My friend Rob and I have caught 4 lbs + bass here, and I landed a catfish the size of my entire leg the other day.

Dale lands one of the smaller catfish!

The only draw back is that the lake tends to shut down around 0900 in the summer time.  The fish go deep early so prepare to hit the lake at first light and fish hard for two to three hours.
