Trip Report 08 May 98
Hohenfels Training Area
Fishing Pond
I have a year permit for this pond,
and they usually stock it with Rainbows. Ill stop by when I make work related trips
to Hohenfels. I usually arrive after 1800 and stay until the sun goes down. The outdoor
recreation folks said they havent stocked the lake this year, but assured me there
were some holdover Trout, a few Carp, a lot of Redeye, and even a few Pike in the water.
Arrived at the pond about 1745. It was a beautiful early summer day with clear skies and
temperatures in the mid 70s. Yes! Fishing again, but not really what I expected.
As I told my friends later, I caught two 14 inch Carp and a bucket load of Redeye. All on
flies. Missed one Carp when he went for a dry black midge imitation and I set the hook
just a little to early.
Caught the other two Carp on a Green Gold Bead Head #14 nymph of German origin and
construction (bought it at the Neumarkt AngleSport - my favorite Bavarian fishing store!).
Just plunked it down in front of the cruising Carp and twitched it a few times as they
approached and they would just suck it right in. They fight like pigs and look pretty
gruesome on the bank, but they are fish.
The Redeye were feasting on an almost continuous hatch of little black midges. They were
almost too easy and were definitely too small for a fight. Kinda fun to watch them strike
and attack my fly though.
Yeah, I guess the pond was fished out, or I couldnt find the few hold over Trout.
Packed it in about 2030 when the sun started going down. Not a bad day looking back on it.
What did I learn?
1. This is a pretty good place to fish when its stocked with
Trout, and all right when you just want to have fun.
2. You really can catch Carp on a fly. Did it once before in my life, but wasnt real
sure about it.
3. I still enjoy fly fishing as much as I did when I started ten years ago.
