Military Fishing Waters

There are several military installations that maintain or have the fishing rights for waters in their local area.  These include Heidelberg, Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Grafenwoehr, Wiesbaden, Stuttgart, and Hohenfels.  While not solely dedicated to fly fishing, they can offer the beginner and experienced military fly fisher a place close to home to practice their craft.  Below you will find a brief description and a phone number for each.

ASCHAFFENBURG.  Outdoor Recreation manages a medium size lake, and sells daily permits for $10.  You can camp overnight for $10 per tent.  06021-96865.

BAMBERG.  The Rod and Gun Club manages a small lake right across from their store.  Daily permits cost $9.   0951-300-7583, or DSN 469-7583.

GRAFENWOEHR.  Manages nine super lakes and two (sometimes only one) streams.  Daily permits cost around $15, and yearly permits can be purchased.  We once saw a 64 cm Rainbow pulled out of one of the lakes, and have routinely caught trout there, and caught an 12" Grayling in one of the streams.  Pike, carp, and other types of fish are also there in great numbers.  Camping is allowed and cabins are available.  09641-551 or DSN 475-7288.

WIESBADEN.  Outdoor Recreation has permits for 200 meters of a local stream north of Frankfurt.  Daily permits can be purchased for $20.  0611-705-5760.

HEIDELBERG.  The USAREUR Hunting and Fishing Office provides information on fishing in the local area, and coordinates classes to obtain hunting and fishing licenses. 6221-57-7410 or DSN 370-7410.

STUTTGARTThe Rod and Gun Club has a fishing stream and sells daily permits for 4.8 km of the Nagold near Neuweiler-Gaugenwald.  0711-6877-253 or DSN 430-7111.

HOHENFELS.  Outdoor Recreation manages a small lake and stocks it regularly with rainbow trout.  Small gold bead head nymphs, and Mickey Finn and Black Nose Dace streamers work fairly well.  The steep banks and trees make casting a challenge, but you can find room.
